Oil burning is normally caused by years of deferred oil changes. Change the parts you can reach, like the PCV and hoses, then run an engine flush in your motor oil. You may have to do it more than once, or purge it with a solvent then drive it with a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for 1000 miles or so.
Yeah, but they will run forever! Also, Subaru's require a more aggressive break in than other manufacture, almost as soon as you drive off the lot.
