But that's my point. In most cases they're not cheap tires. They're expensive, but bad ones in relation to the competition. Even different models of the same make of tire that perform better and are cheaper aren't chosen.

Basically even unrelated to the oem equipment choice, why does the market allow for some of the worst performing tires in a class to command a premium price?
Those Hankooks are #36 out of 37 in their class in performance but in the top 5 as far as cost.

They are for the manufacturer which is why they're using them. Hyundai or whoever doesn't buy tires off of Tirerack.

Manufacturers have to meet CAFE regulations. They're going to put rock-hard high MPG tires on as many cars as they can. This isn't being "bad" at picking tires. They're going to always pick the cheapest, highest MPG tire that won't totally **** off their customers.

Those Continental ExtremeContact DWS are about the best all season you can get. To do much better than that you're looking at running dedicated winter and summer tires.

I don't think so. But they do carry BFGoodrich and the BFGoodrich G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S is a great tire too. Sam's Club tire prices aren't actually that good though.

Look at the Firestone/ Ford explorer issues. Ford picked tires that needed to run half inflated in order to make the explorer stable but decided to equip them with tires lacking a spiral layer to prevent the belts from digging into the mini sidewall.

Hyundai and Kia use Hankook and Kumho because those are Korean tire brands.
