I have a 2007 Ford Ranger Standard Transmission. I want to say its a 2.3 Liter. On Christmas morning of 2014 i got in an accident and put my truck in a ditch. I had it looked at by a friend and he told me that nothing was seriously wrong with the truck and that i could still drive it. I did not make a claim with my insurance due to it being my fault. I drove the truck for about another 5 months. Got the headlight fixed and a new tire in those 5 months. At month 4-4.5 the truck started making what i will call a "knocking" noise. Right then i knew it was way worse than i had hoped it wouldn't be. It started off as a low "knocking" noise and after about 2 weeks of driving it it got louder and louder. I knew the truck was on its last limb but it was my only means of transportation at the time and i did not have the money to get it looked/fixed. Then the last day i drove it the gears were starting to slip. So i canceled my plans and got the truck home and it has not moved since.

I am not looking to get it fixed because i have been saving for another used car. The dealership I'm getting the next car from wont take it. They told me to either take it to a salvage yard or to try to sell it myself. The title is clean. What I'm asking is should i take it to a salvage yard or should i try to sell it myself? If i do try and sell it myself what would be a reasonable price for it?

Before anyone says something yes i know i should have filed a report/claim. But at the time I could not afford it. Below are attached pictures of the major and minor damage to the truck.

Thanks for any an all help!!

I would guess a salvage yard would give you $250-$300 for it. May get $500 if you try and sell it out right.

I am surprised the dealership wouldn't take it. They generally take anything as long as you buy from them. My parents traded a car that was just about dead but still got $500 for it.

I would sell it as a parts truck or just sell the parts.

If you sell it to a salvage yard, you will likely only get $200-300 for it which is the scrap metal value. Since it technically did run when you parked it, it could be repaired and still be a servicable vehicle for someone. Is the knocking coming from the engine, or the transmission, meaning does it make noise while the motor is running or only when driving? Did you check the oil when it first started making the noise? Because it almost sounds like it could have been low on oil and if it was run with low oil, it just got worse. But at this point it does need work.

For a running vehicle, you should get at least $2-3K on craigslist or classifieds, but with it needing work, you might only get $1000 if it is in decent condition. With the damage it has, probably less, but certainly more than scrap value.

Good luck!

The knocking is from something that was caused by the accident or neglect. it might be worth 5-700 to someone who rolled theirs and Ned's a cab or a bed. Craiglist ot for $1000 bucks and youLL get offers in the 5-700 range. Pull the coil wires and write the bill of sale as a no running parts only vehicle.

Unless a coincidence, the knocking is likely from an oil leak caused by the wreck that went unnoticed until the oil was low enough to cause a bearing to fail. "Slipping gears" on a manual means most likely that oil or coolant got onto the clutch. You could make more money parting it out and selling good parts on E-Bay, but that's a lot of work. Either follow Electrician4you's advice, or donate it to charity and take the tax deduction. You might also look for a local dealer offering one of those deals where they guarantee $500 or $1,000 for your trade "running or not."
