What gives, I'm in the Seattle area, but maybe this is an issue all over? Especially in places where they have a rep of slow drivers in the left lane? Not that that really justifies it, but it's a reason, not an excuse.
I know Atlanta pretty well and maybe it could have been since I just wasn't paying attention, but, down there, it wasn't nearly the issue that it is here. Maybe since the left lanes go at 10-15 MPH hour over constantly and the Cops, figure as long as you have traffic flow it's all good. As opposed to many other places, where the Cops look at that as a way to issue tickets and collect revenue for the government.
I bet if folks just followed the 3 second rule, at least if you're on the freeway, that accidents would be reduced in the Major Metros by 20-25%. When there is an accident, it really, really messes up the freeways, especially during rush hour.
..in America, compared to what? Germany has some of the most disciplined drivers in the world. But a solid majority of the rest of the world is near chaos on the roads.
I've driven all over the country and it's an issue everywhere. Whenever I try to maintain a safe following distance on the highway, some yahoo inevitably cuts me off and ruins it.

Most drivers don’t have a clue what the 3 second rule is, and even if they do know, they have no idea how to apply it. The majority of drivers allow about 0.5 to 1 second of space, and they don’t even know, they are tailgating. Because thats what they see other drivers do.
