I need to buy a car. I have researched quite a bit and I have narrowed it down to either a g35 or a golf or GTI if I can find one in my budget. I have owned a Jetta before and it was a pretty good car, but other than that I've always had Jeeps so I don't know anything about any other brands of cars.
I know they are very different cars, but I'm wondering if one stands out above the others. In my research it looks like the g35 is going to be the better choice. I don't care if it's a manual or a automatic, I just want a reliable car. Anyone here have experience with both cars?
I had a GTI until recently. No issues with reliability. I had it for 8 years.
I had a really tough time finding another car that is so sporty, good mpg (23-29mpg) and has a trunk where you can fit so much stuff into it, it is insane. It is like an SUV, sports car, and commute car all in one.
I transported my parents, big dog, cooler, 3 bikes (two on the roof and one in the car) around without issues. I actually moved from the East Coast to the West Coast in that car and it wasn't an issue.
The only thing I got tired of after a while is the bumpy riding. Traintracks really killed the fun for me and I drove a detour to work every morning to avoid them. But going up and down the canyons made up for it!
The Golf lineup is the most reliable platform that VW offers. The rebadged Chrysler minivan in their lineup certainly didn't help with brand ratings. My 2010 GTI did have a few issues. All minor that could wait till the next service though.
G35 overall would likely be more reliable. But for a used purchase it generally comes down to how well the prior owner maintained it. Don't skip on an independent pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic.
VW = less reliable, that's all you need to know. All research shows VW near the bottom in reliability.
Now if you went with a Audi A5 or A4, that would be a better choice than G35.
Audi A5 horsepower = 220hp
Infiniti G35 horsepower = 325hp
hard to to compare these 2 cars.... we are trying to compare an unreliable German car with 220hp to an incredibly reliable and powerful Japanese car with 325hp
the VW and Audi would win as far as fuel consumption goes..... that 325hp isn't free
I really do like the GTI's, and I love German cars. I would consider an Audi, but I only want a coupe or a hatchback. Another deciding factor is going to be insurance. I'm going to get a quote on both and see if there's a big difference.
Would you recommend a manual over an automatic? It seems to me that an automatic is much more complicated and expensive to fix.

Thanks for all the input!
the Audi A5 is a Coupe
insurance is based mostly on driving history and credit history and zip code, though the more powerful cars may be slightly higher
as far as reliability for manual over automatic..... this will depend more on brand reliability more than specific type of transmission..... if your primary concern is reliability:.. go Japanese
I would go with the GTI. Everything(from gas to maintenance) is going to be more expensive on the Infinity. GTI will more then likely be more practice on a day to day basis. The DSG transmission is fantastic if you're going to get an auto. GTI is very easily tunable if you want more power. APR just released a new file for the stage one tune that can put the car at around 270hp/336 ft/lb torque.

Of course Audi S5 would haven competed well against the G35 but I don't think the OP is looking at HP numbers only. There's always Nissan Altima or Honda Accord coupe if the OP can step down from German.
