Why is it the dealers always get the best cars and the general public gets to bid on what the dealers dont want on a seperate day in most auctions. Are there any auctioneers that allow general public and dealers at the same time?

Because your average dealer auction features cars from dealers to sell to other dealers. The dealer groups are the one sponsoring the auction.

Carfax is a rip off since most people do not use insurance to fix their cars.

Only if you file a claim will anything show on Carfax!

Dealer only auctions = OK
Auctions open to the public = junk cars the dealers didn't want at their auction.

A lot of the dealer auctions feature off-lease cars that are offered by the manufacturer's financial services division and are perfectly fine. Many end up as "CPO" cars.

Police auctions, DEA auctions, etc... Have a lot of great cars that have been taken in busts or raids.. BUT you WILL pay a premium price for them.. They will not give them away... That being said you can get deals at these auctions....

My best finds were from non-car auctions. In other words, an estate auction, an auction of the assets of a company that went out of business. An auction of surplus stuff from several public agencies/school districts. At the car auctions, all too often there are many cars that someone is trying to foist off on an unsuspecting buyer. Cars that have been repaired with Bars leak or torque converter lubricant potion, or the like.

Long ago I was looking at a Toyota Supra at an auction. It was odd because it did not have a sunroof and I had never seen one without a sunroof. Ti seemed to run ok throughout they did not allow you to drive it, just move it back and forth. When I shut the door, it did not close right. OK saggy hinges happen. So I slammed the door. There was a loud rattle. Slammed it again. Finally I figured out the door was full of broken glass. Further examination revealed the car didin fact have a sunroof at one time. It had rolled and the roof was bondoed over.

The supra sold for about $1000 below market. It should have been free.

However I did get some good buys at car auctions. One was a Subaru XT turbo that I paid very little for. It ran well and everything seemed great, until I realized the coolant was almost gone. Filled it up and drove three miles. Coolant light was on. watching the exhaust, it was a cloud of steam. Turned out the turbocharger was cooled by the same coolant as the engine and it was leaking. The turbocharging shop said the turbo was integrated, so I needed to replace the entire engine. 4 bottles of bars leak fixed it and it worked great for 3 years. Then it started leaking again. I traded it in on a new car, and got more than I paid for it at the auction. I told the dealer about the coolant, and they said they did not care, they would just wholesale it out anyway with a bunch of other old worn out cars and it would be sold at an auction.

Resurrection thread...

So we are looking at a 2016 F-150 that originally was sole in Quebec January 2016. On October 27, 2017 it was passed through customs in Port Huron, Michigan and transported to an auction in southern Michigan on December 4, 2017. It was "sold" to the current dealer on March 12, 2017 and has been on their lot since.
Just prior to entering the USA, the car was sold in Quebec to its second owner October 06, 2017.
From October 06, 2017 until now the truck has only gone 143 miles.

Should we be concerned?

No......by selling in the USA they got about 25% more for it than in Canada! Currency exchange rate.

I assume you mean it was sold to the current dealer in March, 2018? If not, your time line doesn't add up.

Lots of used trucks from Canada, as already mentioned, it has to do with the exchange rate. The Canadian owner will trade it in at a dealer and it'll be on a transporter to the border the next day.

I'm guessing the "second owner" was simply a broker who took ownership to export it and in reality it's been basically an unsold vehicle the entire time. This would explain why it hasn't been driven much at all.

Entirely a guess tho.
