To be safe use car wash...if your wheels are paints (Black/Gray) then you dont want to use something that will strip protection off the wheel.

Windex has ammonia in it. I don't even recommend it for windows.

Use a wheel cleaner and then a coat of wax on them every few months.

Only the windex that is ammonia free. It works great actually at removing grime and very easily light dust. Gives a much better shine to chrome rims than a standard wheel or car wash cleaner. I have used it on chrome rims for years with no ill-effects.
