Why? Its probably an hour for plugs, and even though the coil takes a couple minutes that's probably a book charge of 1/4 hour. Then theres your standard repair shop markup on parts.
Book time is 2.1 hours to swap all 8 plugs, but a reasonably skilled mechanic could probably do it in 1.5 hours if they've done plenty of them. They're going to round up to the next full hour. They're not the easiest to swap for a novice (the 7th and 8th cylinder are bears to get to) and you can run into problems if they've been in long enough to break, which can happen.
Spark plugs are anywhere from $4 each for AC Delco to $8 each for NGKs. That's $32-$64 for a set of plugs. The shop is going to add probably a 30-40% markup on them (which is typical because they are going to warranty it for you) so assume around $45-$50 for the set of plugs. Around here the shop's labor rates are about $85-$90 an hour. So far we're at $220. Add in the misc supplies (shop rags, cleaner, etc...) and tax and you've easily hit that $300 mark. $300 is fair if the OP can't do it himself.

I guarantee you its at least a 1 hour to replace coil unit. And then they pop you got the diagnosis fee for another hour.

Lol. Nobody is arguing. It's a response in agreement. I took my wife's car. For something that was dealer only fix. They tried to pop me for 1 hour diagnostic and 1 hour labor. You charge for recall items. Wait what. Sorry we will fix it no charge
Failed emissions test due to needing a NEW COIL on my 5th cylinder. Mechanic who I never used before said if I am doing that I should also replace all spark plugs and it would cost in total $300.
What do you all think???
Starts up fine and does have 197,000 miles.
Just do the coil right?
If the vehicle is going to be with you for awhile and you have the ability, I would pay it and have the peace of mind that it is one less likely failure point in the near future. That vehicle with either the 5.3L or the 6.0L engine is good for longer life if still in god shape overall. Considering $300 is only a month payment on a decent vehicle, it's worth it in my mind and doesn't seem outrageous as others have already discussed.
