My 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0 was in the shop today for a wheel bearing and a read on the check engine light. I happened to be driving past the shop when I saw the hood up and my mechanic leaning in on the seat. So I stopped to inquire about the CEL. He told me that the AC was out of range and that was the only code. I didn't get the exact number. We agreed that it didn't seem to be anything to get excited over. But what the heck? The AC works fine. He had the engine idling with the AC on and it was cycling normally. I did notice that I was low on engine coolant with the overflow bottle nearly empty. Coincidence? Engine temp gauge has read normal all along.

Just curious if this is something anyone here has run into before. Thanks in advance...

Not sure what an "out of range" A/C is, or how anything related to A/C can trigger a CEL in a 16 yr old truck...

That usually happens when you leave the A/C ON when doing a self test

It's possible he ran the scan and then turned the AC on. That part I don't know. The light has been on for about a week and no other codes were present.

It's good to scan the codes prior to taking it in, just to be informed. When the mechanic said out of range maybe he was referring to the thermometer?

Engine coolant level and air conditioner refrigerant level are independent of one another. This seems to be a common area of confusion. I would certainly top off your engine coolant and check to see if there are any coolant leaks. This is much more important to your car functioning!

Based on the OBDII code list it appears P0530-P0534 are AC related.

Getting the code number usually helps far more than arbitrary phrases that don't give you a whole lot to go on.

That link best describes the problem. A fault with the sensor or its harness connection. Thanks, ukrcoz and everyone else. And yeah, I do know that engine coolant isn't the same as R134A. My thought was that perhaps the engine was running a little warm, but not being reflected on the dash gauge, thus creating a wider range of temps between the engine and the AC system. What do I know... I'll take a closer look at the wiring. In the meantime the AC is running like a champ.

Your check engine light is on? Before going into too deep .I would Clear the code without the A/C on. and see if it comes back.
