I've developed a high pitched metallic squeal on my 2004 mitsubishi galant with 112k miles. It began only when taking sharp left turns independent of any braking going on. It has now progressed into a constant squeal at higher speeds (60mph+) and going over bumps. Driving normally on city roads does not create the noise. The best I can tell it is coming from the front drivers side. What would you lean towards in a situation like this?

High pitched squeal is always bearing. Is engine on driver or on pass side?

Yes, it should be on pass side. There should be no pulleys etc on the driver side. No belts. Unless noise is coming from the pass side - it's either brake pads shot dead or hub bearing shut dead.

It was the front brake pad wear indicator. I guess I had never encountered that before. The breaking was still firm and not noisy but it did its job in making me inspect the damn things.

Inspect? That's it? You didn't DIY new pads? It's very basic job you know. And boys that DIFY are not gods.
Well, good you got it figured. Make sure rotor is not shot there too.
Btw, is it inside pad? Or both? If it's inside pad and it's worn out more than outside, caliper is sticking on that side.
Did you ever have caliper guides lubricated? Routinely?

What did you break?
I hope that it wasn't the brakes!
