I am looking for a small/medium sized 4WD or AWD SUV for occasional light off-road use in the mountains. I have a FWD Honda CR-V but I really want something with more ground clearance and power to all four wheels. Above all else, the vehicle would need to have a reasonably comfortable suspension for long highway trips.
Anyone here have recommendations?? Or, is there a good off-road forum that you know of?

Thanks for any help!!!
Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco/Bronco Sport? (Bronco Sport was supposed to start assembly in July but it just got pushed to September due to COVID. The bigger Bronco has also been pushed to early 2021.)
Toyota Highlander, if you want more room and comfort, Yukon Denali. I am thinking that the “above all else “ part of your post would exclude several of the smaller 4wd/awd vehicles.
I drive a lot of highway miles and occasionally a little off road or towing. I will always have a 4wd/awd, but comfort will win out overall on my daily driver. ( suburban platform may be the best overall ride in my opinion, and you will forget how to pack a vehicle)

Do you want real off roading? Or just down a nice smooth dirt road?
Body on frame is the best off roading. Not some flimsy unibody SUV that is made up of welded sheet metal.

You do lose a tad of gas mileage with the heavier body on frame.
All of the body on frame vehicles do hold a high resale value. Of course other vehicle also hold a high resale value.
But best to pick the vehicle that your wife prefers. For a happy life.

The OP said "occasional light off-road use" and I think just about any SUV/Crossover would be fine for that. I went to the Wrangler/Bronco recommendations strictly due to those vehicles having a little more ride height and the fact they are smaller SUV's.
