So now it's Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi. Will the Mitsubishi's get some French influence too?

You must be having a laugh calling the Versa the best in a class that contains the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris and even Ford Fiesta (as well as the Mirage the worst when the Smart is still around).

Well this is a two month old event as the purchase was in October.

Nissan took the stake in Mitsubishi for the following reasons:
-access to the SE Asia market where M is strong and N is not
-access to M's EV technology
-access to M's Kei car business in Japan where Nissan is uncompetitivve
-the age old "synergy" potential.

Mitsubishi's corporate strategy never ceases to confound me. Mitsubishi Motors *could* be a major player on the world market, but the parent corporation doesn't seem to give a damn about MMC. What was once a thriving, innovative company is now slipping further and further into mediocrity, as are their products.

I can't believe they would sell a controlling stake to Nissan, once considered their closest rival. It doesn't benefit Mitsu at all.

Mitsu is really a financial conglomerate. Cars & trucks are just one of it's cash flow businesses.

They didn't have much choice. It was a semi-hostile takeover. They had a fuel economy scandal that rocked their share price and Nissan was able to scoop up a controlling stake for cheap.

Now Mitsu has some operating capital and Nissan has control of a strategic partner.

So it could benefit both of them.

I didn't call it the best I said "one of the best. The smart car is a "city car" and not a sub compact but that's why I said the mirage was "arguably" the worst.
