I checked out both of these vehicles while visiting relatives. I hear you can't really go wrong with either of them, as they're both dependable with good reviews. I currently drive a 2005 Toyota Rav4, and will admit that I'm partial to the Rav4. On the plus side, it's got a layout I'm used to (see link below for more details), extra features like all that safety software (like automatic stop, lane swerving), included remote ($385 extra on the Honda CRV), and local dealership (where I live, the closest Honda dealership is probably around a 1.5 hour drive away), but also costs an extra $3,000.

What are your views on paying an extra $3,000 in a situation like this, as well as anything else I'm missing?

Not sure - read your post 3 times - what is that you asking about? You already drive 2005 RAV 4 -and?
If you were shooting for a new one, buy RAV4 Hybrid and be happy.

My wife test drove both back in 2015 and she liked the RAV better. I hated where they put the shifter on the CRV.

I have a 2002 CRV but the dealer is 1 mile away. The owner also sells Toyota's next door both are great cars.

I guess having Hondas I just go with them and knowing the service advisor at Honda. I got the CRV way back when it came out in 1997.

I have had a CRV, a RAV4 and a couple of Subarus (older models). RAV4 would be my pick. The CRV had some issues. The AC compressor blew up. Fairly certain the ac compressor continues to be an issue on the newer CRVs as well. In your situation, a Honda dealer 1.5 hours a way is not at all convenient. I would get a RAV4, but probably would not buy a brand new one.

RAV4, but not a new one. A 2009-2012 with the V6.

How did you manage to get a 2002 in 1997?

If you're shopping new, Honda just updated the CRV -- the new one is supposedly very, very good.

That said, in your particular situation, I'd get the RAV4. You're more comfortable with them, and the dealer is local. That alone is worth it for me. See if they'll negotiate the price at all on the RAV4. You could probably get that price difference lower.

Maybe they've been a CRV owner since it came out in '97, but now they drive an '02?

I don't think the Honda CRV can remotely come close to the Subaru Forester in terms of winter driving performance if the OP lives in any area with bad weather. The Toyota RAV4 is slightly better than the Honda CRV in that regard. I've seen videos of comparison tests on uphill acceleration and it isn't close. Now, the brand new CRV might be different, but I would have to see evidence of that.
