Years ago I had a remote start installed on my truck. All I had to do was to push one button to start the engine. The range was somewhat an issue but it was good enough. Fast forward to my new 2016 ES350, which like many other new cars, comes with an app to remotely interact with the car on your iphone. To start the car now I have to first get in the phone, launch the app, enter the password, enter the password again (sometimes I have to re verify myself by login in the account), then push start. For some reason, a good 25% of the time fails to connect altogether. Anyway, installing a new remote is out of the question. Too many risks.
Another leap backwards in efficiency. Like chip card readers.
I have heard some of the cell based remote starts also allow you to control heat and AC, open/close windows, even set the radio to a preferred station and adjust the volume (which seems kinda silly). they will tell you what the temperature is inside and outside the car and will even allow you to tell the car what temperature you want it to be at a given time and it will start sufficiently before that time to bring the interior to the desired temperature. Does anyone have one that does those things?
I don't get it, why would you want to start the engine when your not there?
Wow! I have no idea. I guess I just completely wasted $ 189 buying new remote fobs and having them programmed. It sure is silly for all those manufacturers to put remote start in so many (or all) of their vehicles. Makes no sense at all. Good thing you pointed that out.
the old remote that i just retired had a different problem. The slightest brush of the remote button would make the truck start. If it was in my pocket, it would start repeatedly while I was eating dinner or working.
The factory starter on my Buick requires you to hit the lock button and then hold the start in for about 4 seconds. It's would be very difficult to do it accidentally. The other buttons are a whole other issue. I've hit the panic button more than once and have found the trunk or car unlocked on occasions. At least with the trunk you can't really tell it's open.
They should all have some type of double trigger, like a button on the side you need to depress to activate the others. I was able to fix the panic button because I took the remote apart and put some tape on the contacts. Obviously not a solution for the rest of them.
