my new-to-me 2001 pathfinder comes with some 17 momo wheels and it needs new tires. tires are P275/60/17.

I imagine smaller, narrower, and lighter wheels/tires would give me better milage. since i don't care for the cool factor of the bigger wheels, would I be better off replacing with the standard wheels and tires (P255/65R16).

is there a market for used pathfinder momo wheels?

Blue - you can certainly sell the wheels on Craigslist or eBay. Stick with the standard size wheel and get a more highway style tire. Look at tire rack for tire testing and reviews. I put some new Firestone LE2 tires on my Durango and I get at least 20mpg on the hwy. This is with a hemi engine. You will get back some MPG.

What is the payback period? Have you figured this out mathematically?

Please post the numbers.

Theoretically, this analytical approach makes sense - - but are people really spending the time to track and calculate these things??

Yes, they do, but in this case I wouldn't even bother doing any math on it. For a vehicle that's already 16 years old, it may never pencil out. You can buy a lot of gas for the cost of all new wheels and tires.

Look up the parent company, Horizon Tire. They have offices in the USA, but they are selling tires made in China. Here is an interesting article:

Horizon Tire: Chinese Factories Coming to U.S. - Tire Review

The Michelin Tire advertising slogan is well put "Because so much is riding on your tires"

Generally speaking, OEM Tires and Wheels are your best bet, Blue Water.

You should be able to pick up a decent set of OEM Wheels / Rims at a very reasonable price and then sell your "specialty" oversize wheels for considerably more.

As for tires . . . I'm a firm believer in YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR when it comes to bargain tires. For you own safety sake, as well as the safety of others around you, purchase quality tires.

255 55 17 are the correct fit tires for 17 inch rims. You might look into a craiglist trade for factory wheels with rubber, or just replace with 16's rims and rubber. You can upgrade the 16 inch tire with 275/60/16 if you want it softer. You can get black steel rims with rubber which will set you back $600 easily.

In the long run, a set of touring all seasons will work good for you. Name brand high mileage tires are sometimes softer.
