Do you have one in your car and does it really work at saving your ass? That is the question. My thinking is no - due to instant on and also a cop can just turn off his radar/laser and make a visual sighting and give you a ticket. Am I missing something?

Back in the day, absolutely. Now with laser/instant-on widespread not so much. Waze, presuming you're in an area well trafficked by other users, is a better solution these days.

problem with waze is that it is often too difficult to see the warnings on the small phone screen and I have a Nexus 6P with a 5.7 inch screen and it's still too small, it would be nice if it would have a voice mode giving warnings such as "traffic cop ahead"

It does. Just unfortunately no way to filter by alert type, so you have to hear about all the cars on the side of the road too.

I recall it doing this... you might want to look into settings and enable sounds

waze has saved my a$$ a few times and I think a radar detector would have caught it too late

Mine has saved me a few times, but it just really depends on where you're using it. If you're driving somewhere that has a lot of curves or hills, they won't work as well because it blocks the beam. As soon as the cop comes over the hill or around the curve, BOOM, he has you!

Now if you live somewhere that's mostly flat with straight highways, I think they're useful.

I don't think they're worth it. In 20 years of driving, I've never owned one and have 0 moving violations.

Waze can be a tool to help but nothing is totally accurate. The radar detector relies heavily on line of sight and most cops will not give that to you. They'll be in defilade.

Best thing to really do is use Waze and pay attention to traffic. Are oncoming vehicles flashing their lights at you? Is the pack in front of you braking? If the cop is on the right shoulder and you're in the right lane, will you move over as courtesy? It's all about blending in and not standing out, IMO.

Yes.

Any ticket is too many tickets. It was more functional when I was a foolish driver - taking roads at multiples of the speed limit. But even after I have slowed down and made myself less conspicuous, it is still good to know where many of the cops are and to be able to make sure I am not over the limit when I notice them before they notice me. Not a bad insurance policy for about $200.

I don't think they're worthwhile anymore. too many false positives.. instant on radar.. Plus.. You get pulled over with one, you've got a far higher chance of getting a ticket vs a warning.

What COULD be worthwhile.. A dashcam with GPS.

Cop pulls you over and says you were doing 75.. Pull the video that shows your GPS speed.

I don't need any of that. Just drive at the speed of traffic, cops usually don't come after you!
