I was thinking of getting a used Honda Pilot, probably a 2003 or 2004. Can anyone tell me if you currently have or have had this vehicle? If so, what's been your experience with it? Or if you have had a good experience with another car of the like, let me know.
With the inevitable rise in gas prices, I'm wondering if an SUV is a good idea even if it is one of the better SUV's with regards to gas mileage (at least the reports say so).

A relative of mine had a 2004 Pilot and was happy with it, no problems, but he traded it in on a new CR-V for the gas mileage. The gas in a large SUV was getting to be a killer, although the Pilot is probably still better on gas than others in its class. If you don't need a large SUV, you should look into a CR-V.
We had (traded up) an '04 Acura MDX (the more luxurious version of the Pilot) and were very happy with it. Never a single problem. Honda has a magical way of making quality machines with affordability in mind. It got about 19-20mpg in mixed driving on average - not great, but not horrible. It did a little better on the highway (low 20s).
the pilot is an excellent choice,if you need the space.however if space is not an issue i would seriously consider a crv for the gas mileage even though the pilot is not bad on gas.
Now, personally, I drive a Ford Escape. It has A/T, A/C and power everything.
It's 1 year old, I purchased it new for $16,000 and I get 29 mpg at 60 mph on the freeway. It may not be the highest rated small SUV, but I like it very much and it handles very well. It's also much les expensive than some of the others.
Some good info, thanks everybody. I didn't even think about Subaru or the Escape. I really do need a third row but I didn't want to go the route of the minivan. I know one version of the 4Runner has a third row but it doesn't look like it would be enough room for much of anything.
If you have any other suggestions or comments, please continue to post.
I think a good small SUV with decent gas milage would be a Subaru Forrester.
Yup, I agree! And, the slightly larger (longer) Outback is also a good bet. My 2008 model Outback averages 28.6mpg on the highway...fairly decent mileage for a mid-sized SUV...
Neither is as large and roomy as the Pilot, however both have AWD...
