My car failed smog in July 2015, then passed several months later, in January 2016. It's almost been 2 years since the smog check notice has been mailed for July 2015. Will I have to take another test in July 2017, which is 2 years from the notice? Or can I wait until Jan. 2018 (2 years from when I submitted the passed smog and renewed the car's registration)? FYI: I haven't received any paperwork yet from the DMV.

What state? Some don't have smog checks at all.

Here in Washington, an every other year state, it's when the registration is due regardless of the actual date of the last test.

Why are you asking a random forum who has no clue where you are? Call the DMV for your state and get the answer from them.

50 states, 51 sets of rules. Ask the local authorities, that is what you are paying them for.

You might want to get a head start in case there are repairs necessary to pass.

"Several months later" was 6 months later... Did you have overdue fees for registration?
