What's the big deal about whether they cover it or not. Are you interested in the car? That's the pint of the ad. Why is it so important to people that they show the plate? Covering doesn't mean they are trying to hide something. If you want to skip it because it is obscured, that's fine. Who cares?

It's just a conversation about a topic relating to cars, like every other topic in this forum. Why can't we have conversations? I mean, we can say "who cares?" about every topic posted here.

It may not show up on a Carfax report, but if damage/rebuilt/etc does show up on Carfax, that is something to take in to consideration. It's negative testing.

I think we can all agree, the chance of someone actually taking the plate and doing "something" with it is slim to none.

I'm sure the potential is there, but you probably have a greater chance of getting eaten by a shark.

No they can't. The DMV has restrictions as to who they release such information to and for what purpose.

The DPPA is a federal law that regulates and restricts who has access to the information in DMV records.

The DPPA also regulates how a recipient of DMV records can share information with another person or organization. The law allows the DMV to release personal information only for the purposes that the DPPA defines.

The DPPA restricts how personal information is released. The DPPA defines personal information as information that identifies a person including

  • photographs
  • Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Client Identification Number (CID)
  • name
  • address (but not the 5-digit ZIP code)
  • telephone number
  • medical information
  • disability information

And that's just the crux of it. Covering the plate is just silly and completely meaningless to someone who wants to find your address. And to everyone else, it's just pointless.

As to Tamara's contention about people on forums being pissed at her and want to come to her house by following plate numbers, I've been on forums since '96 and have pissed off plenty of people, and have posted pictures of my plates AND house and never once been contacted IRL by those people. And I have custom plates, too.
It's all about minimizing risk. Just like locking your door. If someone wants to break into YOUR house or steal YOUR car specifically, locking doors isn't going to stop them. However, if someone is looking for the easiest victim, they will go to the car that is unlocked, the house without an alarm, etc.

Same thing here. People are trying to minimize their risk by not advertising their license plate on the internet. It probably doesn't matter 99.99% of the time, but I don't blame the person who decides to not show the plate, and don't automatically assume they have something to hide.
