Find a used Ford Fusion, as those were pretty reliable, otherwise get a $3000 car and keep $2000 aside for repairs.
But for $3-5000, you are looking at a 10-15 yr old car.
Agree with the family, friends, and co-workers angle. Ask everyone you know if they know anyone selling. You can get a better deal this way and sometimes feel more at ease knowing a family, friend, co-worker you trust owned it rather than some person you have no clue about.
I recently purchased a used Toyota for 4k from a coworker that is listed everywhere else at 6-8k.

For that money I would buy a high mileage 4WD Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner. Or 2WD models with the mileage you want. As long as there is no rust they will run forever.

Lease, and don't listen to all the naysayers that will follow this post. You'll be spending more than $139 on repairs AFTER that 5K is gone too.
Don't do it. You can find a good car for that amount. And if that is all the money you have the last thing you need is debt that gives you no asset value. Leasing is for suckers unless you can write it off your taxes.

Spend some time on CL and see what sort of junk you will end up for $5000, unless you are referring to those $1502 05 F-150 and Tacomas.
