2006 honda accord.
last time, and only time, it was changed was at 100k 5 years ago. gear shifts feel fine. stock clutch.

conflicting advice on the intertubes. some say don't change it, metal shavings and whatnot. but I think that's more applicable for auto trans.

Well, this is an interesting question.

Gearbox oil doesn't have the heat and contamination issues of motor oil, nor does it have to act as combination hydraulic fluid and lubricant like ATF. Operating temperatures are quite moderate. I would suggest that if it doesn't get contaminated with water or something else, it will degrade very slowly.

There shouldn't be metal shavings in gearbox oil; if there are, you've got bigger issues than changing the oil.

So while I can't see how changing the oil could hurt, I also don't see that it's a high priority.

Someone with more knowledge than I may have more information to offer.

here's a thread about metal shavings.

here's a video about it causing an automatic trans. to slip.

Well, first of all, that's about ATF not manual gear oil, and secondly keep in mind that anyone can post any damn fool thing they want on the internet.

It wouldn't hurt to change it. Gear oil breaks down over time and a few bucks worth of oil is much cheaper than a new transmission.

Your Accord has two bolt holes on the side of the transmission - one is a fill port and the other is a drain port. You simply take the drain bolt out, wait for it to drain, then put it back in. Then take the fill bolt out, and fill it to the point that (on level ground) fluid starts to come back out of the hole.

Having a funnel with a hose is basically necessary, but otherwise it's an easy job.

My opinion? Can't hurt. I'd say every 100k miles is reasonable preventative.

yeah, it's not a tough DIY. I was more worried about potential damage it may cause.
I understand MT is different from AT, but wanted to check to be safe.

There is no possible damage to the manual transmission from gear oil change, unless you put the wrong oil or not enough.
Also, if doing it yourself, always loosen the fill plug before taking the drain plug out. Otherwise you might be stuck.

Seems like you have a good handle on the clutch/manual driving, or you drive 100 miles at a time at 75 MPH in the high gear, either way, enjoy motoring.

Drain and refill it. It’s a manual trans. I would, do it simply because yiu do get some metal filings that run around.
Ps. Make sure the fill plug is able to be loosened first before you loosen the drain plug.
