No, he's much better than I at diagnosing problems.
Just above the exhaust manifold is an EGR line, it's rusted at the base.
A $65 part, and easy to replace being right on top.

Sorry all, should have seen my mechanic prior to starting thread. The lower intake manifold gasket went last year due to the original Dex Cool used over a decade ago, GM settled a bunch of lawsuits on that in California a decade or so ago.
