Thinking about buying a certified pre-owned car from a dealer for $17,500. How much should I expect to pay in taxes/fees (this would be in NJ). How would NY differ?

thanks!

New Jersey's tax rate is 7%, New York's is 4%, based on purchase price. Other fees determined by your city location and the dealers fees.

The fees are the same whether it's brand new or pre-owned/used. It's whatever the net purchase price is after the trade-in is deducted times the sales tax rate.

The state where you purchase the car is irrelevant, taxes are paid for the state where the car is registered. Same goes for title transfer and registration fees. Dealer fees vary by dealer and can be negotiated.

In my experience when you buy from the dealer you pay the taxes and fees based on their location. You get temp plates to move it home. You will have to prove insurance, too. When you register it at home you will get credit for the taxes paid but not for registration fees or dealer add ons.
Buying in NY and moving to NC was painful, bringing up from FL was easy.
