Why do truck drivers use them in residential areas? The loud noise actually gives me bad migraine headaches. Should they be banned in certain areas?

If a Jake brake gives you migraines how would you fare with Harleys?

Why do they use them? Because you can't slow or stop 10s of tons of freight via axle brakes alone... compression brake and regular brakes combined stops alot of momentum when used together...

Thanks, good thing I'm only here for another week because my headaches are the worst ever! And yes, motorcycle noise is bad too. I live in a quiet cul-de-sac. I don't mean to whine, but I can't believe people put up with this noise constantly.

If you are in an urban residential area, there is likely a ban on exhaust brakes (and loud MV noise of any kind) (Especially in LA, where your profile indicates).

There is little need to use an exhaust brake in a residential area, (slow initial speed, due to residential; usually not too steep to need extra braking beyond service brakes; Often restricted, always should be used with tasteful discretion... for vehicle benefit but not at the expense of comfort of residents.)

There are ways to muffle noise of the exhaust brakes.

Take action.

I'm in Nevada at the moment, where there seems to be no restrictions on anything automotive, the louder the better! Anyway, I'm at my sister's house, and even she said they wouldn't have bought the house so close to a main road had they known trucks would drive by all day with loud "Jake Brakes"! I really think those are used to **** people off mostly!!

Because cars tend to pull out in front of us, so we have to use everything at our disposal to avoid hitting them.

No - doing so sacrifices safety for convenience. I try not to use my jakes at all between 9PM and 6AM, but when they're needed, I use them regardless of whether they're banned or not.

Or Here in OK (kinda ironic ;-)

This sounds like the people who purchase a home around a railroad track, and then complain about the train noise.

My house is in the approach path to an airport, a half mile from a train track which is next to a highway. I love all of the background noise. It's the sound of commerce. It gives me a reason to blast my surround sound system when I am watching a movie with the family.

Bisbee may be quiet enough to avoid headaches.
