You hear people say oil is oil, just change it and you are good to go.
Well thats not true, at least for me.
I drive a 09 Nissan Cube, last 6,800 miles I used Quaker State Full Synthetic Oil. It is not time to change the oil but I will do so since the Cube runs average to below average on it. Engine does not sound smooth and is not responsive feeling very often.
I am going to try Castrol Syntec in a few days. After that I am going back to Pennzoil Platinum, every car I have owned has run exceptionally well on PP.
Its odd Sopus which is Shell oil produces both Quaker State and Pennzoil.
I own a turbocharged Kia that requires an ACEA A5/B5 rated oil. That not only means synthetic but a rare high grade one. Pennzoil Platinum Ultra is the easiest to find. This little Kia is pickier about oil than cars I've owned that cost twice as much with much more power.
I'm extremely picky about motor oil and try to use oil that is as close to a true class IV (PAO) synthetic as practically possible in my vehicles. My oil of preference is Amsoil, but I'll use other brands in a pinch. That being said, unless you're in brutally cold weather (like sub-0F), I sincerely doubt the vehicle will run any different on one brand vs any other brand.
Most "full" synthetics are Class III and it takes a bit of research to determine the true base stock of most motor oils. The good news is that for 99.9% of us, it doesn't make much difference. Certainly, a Nissan Cube should be fine with almost any synthetic oil.
Refined oil to a certain spec is all the same. The oil you purchase in the can is different between manufacturers due to additives.
