GORDA, Calif. (AP) - Try not to run low on gas in the tiny Big Sur town of Gorda, where a gallon of unleaded regular costs $5.20. And it's $5.40 a gallon for premium.
Well, gosh, it's expected to be high there. After all, I believe "gorda" translates into "fat." Fat prices.
And if you've ever been to that part of the world, it's remote and reached by a very curvy and beautiful mountain-y road. It must cost a bundle to truck in the petrol. Not surprising, those prices
Additionally, if you put a gas station on an acre of land in Kansas costing 30,000 or in some ritzy place costing $1million....you need to have higher income to adjust for the investment.
This is one of the reasons that gas costs so much more in places with high priced land.

I have been through Big Sur many times. Any tourist to Big Sur can fill up in Monterey when driving from the north or Cambria driving from the south and they won't have to deal with that. Same thing happens to people driving across vast unsettled areas of the west, stations in remote places always have prices quite a bit more than in the larger cities. Most places in CA these days have pump prices close to $4 per gallon regular. Everything costs about 20 or 25 percent more in Big Sur, so it's not a big shock to see gas for $5.20 there. Don't worry, the rest of us will be paying that soon, Big Sur is just a little ahead of it's time.
