Filled up at my local Mobil station this morning for $3.55/gallon for 87 octane. I think this is the highest I've ever paid for gas, ever. I'm in Southern California near Long Beach / Orange County.
Where I live in England we're currently paying the equivalent of $8.68 per gallon which is why I haven't filled up in ages. And you Yanks think you've got it bad.

I know we don't have it all that badly. Then again, also realize that England has more mass transit options, overall, than the states do, and that people in England tend to be more environmentally-conscious (i.e. purchase smaller vehicles and combine trips whenever possible) whereas most Americans have the selfish atittude of "I'll buy as many Hummers as I can afford and don't care about how much gas it takes to fill them. Butt out."

Hehe. We have got our fair share of soccer mom SUVs cluttering up the roads too but yes, we do have lots of little cars over here as well. I have a compact and if I drive it carefully (which doesn't happen all that often ) I can average over 50mpg which is more that a lot of hybrids! *smug*
It sucks that in American cities, you are looked down upon for driving cheaper cars with high gas mileage. Then, if you have a Hummer or Escalade, everyone loves you. I'd love to get small, little car for my first car, but I'll be made fun of by everyone at school.

I'd get one anyway if I was you. They're great fun to drive because they're so small and nippy and because of their size they're really easy to maneuver and park. The great fuel mileage is just gravy. Who cares if they laugh? Heck, you'll be the one laughing when you've got money in your pocket and they're always broke because of having to stand at the gas pump twice a week to fill up a tank the size of which you'd normally expect to find in a truck. It'll be great fun.
Yeah. I'm thinking about either a Honda Civic Si, Mazda 3, Volkswagen GTI/Jette GLI, and for the SUV, a Toyota 4Runner.
