Why would you need a truck when the Escalade can handle all towing and family needs?? Be kind to the earth and get a 30mpg sedan.

It may have been "redesigned" but not really updated.

Still has rear drum brakes!!!

Of course it has drum brakes in the back. It's called reliability first and foremost. In a pickup truck almost all (75% maybe?) of the braking is done with the front wheels. In fact, given the bias, this often results in the rear brakes being under used. In many cars, SUVs, and almost all trucks with rear discs this results in under working of the rear calipers and, over the long term, seizing of the rear calipers. Brake drums will never seize from under use.

Servicing drum brakes is also much cheaper than discs.

You didn't list any reasons to own a truck.

I have a little 93 Nissan pickup and I love that I can throw stuff in the back. I use it all the time for that. I see stuff for free on the side of the road, like plants and pots or furniture, etc., and I can stop and pull over and throw them in the back. Stuff I can use for myself, stuff I can resell on Craigslist, etc.

I can buy sod for my balcony for my dog from Lowe's, messy stuff, big stuff. I love that.

But, my next vehicle will be a van. They're way more versatile. I like the idea of being able to travel and sleep in it, as well as haul random stuff.

Since you didn't mention the need to haul giant stuff, a small pickup would work fine for hauling whatever. But, since you didn't mention hauling anything at all - it seems to me all you need is a van.

At any rate, if you buy a pickup at all, I don't see the need for a big one for you.

Plain and simple facts about the Taco's drums still being used, from a Taco engineer.

How many other trucks or suvs have drum rear brakes? Even the tundra has rear disc.

Disc is superior. They will not seize up. The piston moves every single time the pedal is
pushed.

It is all about the money.

Toyota is still soaking the Tacoma name for all its worth.

It will be interesting, to see what happens when the new ford ranger comes out.

What he didn't mention is that drums are cheaper from a price point perspective.

I don't know if it's still true but Silverados had rear drums long after Ford went to all disc on the F150.

Ford had them on non-ABS equipped cars up through the early 2000s.

Discs also warp, and need periodic resurfacing and replacement. Calipers seize in place, which causes uneven and accelerated wear. They’re a higher maintenance system than drums.

My 20 year old Tacoma has drums on the rear, and to this day I haven’t had to touch them. It’s been nice only having to maintain my front brakes. The truck stops just fine.

Whether or not discs are superior depends on the application. On the rear of a small truck? Why bother when drums work just fine?

Not to mention the fact that the front brakes carry like 75% of the braking load anyway. If it's a McLaren, fine get 4W disk. Otherwise rear disk brakes are completely unnecessary.
