I would like to spend less than $50k for an SUV or minivan and would love suggestions from those more knowledgeable than I am.
We live in northern Michigan so something that can handle snow is important. Of course we will also get snow tires for winter.
I would love to drive this for the next 10-15 years with as few problems as possible. Looking for dependability and longevity - style isn't a big concern.
We are a family of 4 with a big dog and occasionally transport other people's kids.
We tow a popup so we don't need something super burly for that purpose.
In the full-size segment, definitely look at the Toyota Sequoia and the Nissan Armada (recent redesign is based on the extremely solid Nissan Patrol platform).
Put $25K in your retirement account, buy an Outback, and put a receiver hitch and roof box on it. A big dog will fit in the back just fine. Why spend an extra $25K to haul somebody else's kids around once in a while? You'll also burn much less fuel over 10 years of ownership.
A Highlander would be more than sufficient. You would be fine with something smaller (6-cylinder Outback) honestly. We have 4 large dogs and my dad that we tote around and my 4-cylinder Outback is fine, though I am looking to get back into a Venza.
Edited to add, what GeoffD is exactly what we have with my Outback. We have a trailer hitch (and a hitch mounted luggage carrier) and a roof top carrier. So interior space is what it is all the time.

Yep. I have a 6-cylinder Outback. It holds four 6'2" adults just fine. Any large dog shy of a Great Dane or Mastiff would fit in the back. I imagine you can stuff 3 kids in the back seat. I've never tried.
I tow with mine all the time. 3,000 pounds (2,700 on the 4-cylinder) is plenty for a pop-up trailer. You have to be a bit careful about tongue weight. You can put light stuff in a hitch-mounted luggage carrier but the car really isn't designed to handle big tongue weights. I thought the 4-cylinder felt underpowered but I was coming from a 6 second zero to 60 mph car. Most people seem to be happy with the 4-cylinder.
Toyota killed the Venza in 2015. There aren't a heck of a lot of AWD midsize wagon options unless you're buying Euro luxury brands.
If I absolutely needed to have more seating, I'd go with an MDX.

A 2011 Honda Pilot would be good I guess. Not that I ever driven one.
And lol good luck trying to keep your current car for so long, you may want to start a protest against the rise of self-sdriving vehicles then.
