Saw a recent Motor Trend magazine article (print) comparing the four super hot hatches including the Civic Type-R and Golf R. Looks good until I saw the price. The base and as tested price were in the $40,000 range. For roughly the same level of power and performance they could spend roughly $10,000 less and get a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, or 370Z. That price range offers a huge amount of choices, many of which offer similar performance. So why would someone want to buy one of these super hot hatches other than for rally or rally cross racing?
Carry more people, lower running costs, more practicality, less ostentatious?
They don’t carry more people than the cars I listed above, perhaps maybe one more person compared to the coupes I listed. How do you figure lower running cost? They don’t have better MPG than the base model coupes I listed. I concede your point on practicality as opening the hatch and folding down the back seats will give you more room but with seats up there is less cargo room than some of the coupes I listed. Less ostentatious? Have you seen how these super hot hatches have been dressed up? Some are so outrageous as to be obnoxious. The base model coupes I listed are far from ostentatious compared to some of these hatches.
What does this even mean? Are you saying that your door hinges are hot? Is this referring to a convertable car or a sunroof? No comprehendo amigo.
Cars like the Golf, Focus, and Civic all have their performance hatch versions like GTI & Si. Well all these and the WRX have a higher performance level above this. They do 0-60 in around 5 seconds and take corners hard but they do this with a price tag of around $40,000.
Choosing the Civic Type R or Golf R over a mid range Camaro or Mustang comes down to personal choice. Some people prefer the performance and image of the former over the latter. Autos are often not rational choices.
They are 2 completely different classes of cars. You are comparing 2 door sport coupes to 4 door short wagons. also, Some people like the subtle look of a hatch more than a "muscle car"
