I had a "check engine light come up on my car. i went to AutoZone and they read the code. The computer not only said what the code was telling us, but also said this type of code usually relates to a gas cap failure. I purchased a new OEM gas cap, ($20.00). The new gas cap sealed the gas line much better than the 10 year old one that came with the car. Problem solved.

I then bought a scanner that works with my android phone ($11.00) and downloaded the suggested software to my phone (free). So now I can read the codes myself and save a trip to AutoZone.

i do some work on my car but not everything. I figure that if I can hang a new part and it fixes the problem, I'm ahead. If it doesn't, I haven't lost all that much and the dealer or independent shop can take a crack at it.

If you want the work done at one shop then take it to them for diagnostic. I own a shop an I always have customers come in. "I went to AutoZone I have an 02 sensor code. Will you put in my new 02 sensor."

2 weeks later that same customer is back accusing me or my tech's of not changing the sensor because the code is back. An auto parts house code reader will give you a starting point. However it's not even accurate 50% of the time.
Any shop worth doing business with will insist on their own diagnosis. Otherwise they might get in there and find the other shops diagnosis was wrong. At that point you the customer own the shop the labor to tear it down and still have not fixed the problem.
