I'm considering buying a car, may buy NEW or USED, depending on the deal I can get. Leaning towards Mazda or Hyundai, but just getting started looking & am considering most compact cars. Does the remainder of the factory warranty generally come with a used car? Hyundai has a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. If I buy a used 2015 Hyundai with 25,000 miles on it, will that car's powertrain then be covered under the original warranty for another 6 years/75,000 miles? Does this vary by make, possibly by the state the car was bought in (I live in Washington state)?
TIA
David

No, the Hyundai/Kia powertrain warranty isn't transferable. Only the 5 year/60,000 mile bumper to bumper is transferable.
Regarding the bumper to bumper, does it transfer regardless of the purchase being from a dealer or an individual? Do you know if there's a brand where ALL of the coverage transfers?
I know with any car, something can go wrong at any time, but we have two older Hondas which are both well north of 200,000 miles and neither has ever needed anything but routine stuff like oil and tires. As long as you're picking a pretty reliable vehicle, chances are very good that warranty isn't going to be used.
I believe the bumper to bumper warranty transfers no matter what type of sale, but you would be best to call Hyundai customer care and ask them to make sure.
As for brands that have transferable warranty coverage, here are a few.
Toyota - 3 year/36,000 bumper to bumper, 5 year/60,000 powertrain, 8 year/100,000 Hybrid components and 2 year/25,000 ToyotaCare (complimentary dealership maintenance visits) are all transferable.
Lexus - 4 year/50,000 bumper to bumper, 6 year/70,000 powertrain and 8 year/100,000 on Hybrid components all transferable.
Honda - 3 year/36,000 bumper to bumper, 5 year/60,000 powertrain and 8 year/100,000 on Hybrid and fuel cell components are all transferable.
GM (except Cadillac) - 3 year/36,000 bumper to bumper, 5 year/60,000 powertrain, 5 year/100,000 powertrain for diesel engines and fleet purchases, 8 year/100,000 Hybrid components and 2 year/24,000 complimentary maintenance visits are all transferable.
Cadillac - 4 year/50,000 bumper to bumper, 6 year/70,000 powertrain and 3 year/36,000 PremiumCare (complimentary maintenace visits) are all transferable.
Ford - 3 year/36,000 bumper to bumper, 5 year/ 60,000 powertrain, 5 year/100,000 diesel powertrain and 8 year/100,000 on Hybrid components all transferable.
Chrysler (Dodge, Jeep, Ram Trucks, and Fiat included) - 3 year/36,000 bumper to bumper, 5 year/60,000 powertrain, 5 year/100,000 diesel powertrain, and 8 year/100,000 Hybrid component coverage are transferable.
per Hyundai, the following are their warranty on a new vehicle:
America’s Best Warranty covers so much and shows our commitment to high quality and driver satisfaction. Our coverage includes:
• 10-year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Protection
• 5-year/60,000-Mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty
• 7-Years/Unlimited-Mile Anti-Perforation Warranty
• 5-Year/Unlimited-Mile 24-hour Roadside Assistance
• 12-month/12,000-Mile Replacement Parts and Accessories Limited Warranty
• 8-Year/80,000-Mile Federal Emission Defect & Performance Warranty
• 7-Year/70,000-Mile California Emission Control Systems Warranty
per their FAQ on warranty:
What happens if I sell my vehicle before its warranty expires?
If you sell your vehicle while still under the 10-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, the warranty will be reduced to 5-year/60,000-mile coverage. Other Hyundai warranty terms and coverage periods, including Roadside Assistance, remain unchanged for subsequent owner(s).
So it looks like all the warranties remain on preowned except for the powertrain which is reduced to only 5 years or 60,000 miles. Note this is standard preowned and not their Certified PreOwned which has a different set of warranties.
If buying newer car used, only get a certified one. You can only buy these from the manufacturers dealers. Only a Hyundai dealer can certify a Hyundai. All the certified cars I’ve seen for different makes (Mercedes, Porsche, etc...) go to 100k on powertrain and many other things.
Lease returns are a large source of certified vehicles.
How about just asking the dealer about the warranty or calling the manufacturer instead of asking here the dealer should know more than any of us on here.
