I live in the country where we get snow and such so a 4WD would be a blessing, plus some of the roads around here are gravel roads.
And yes for if I wanted to go off roading it would come in handy.
There are no fuel efficient 4WD's? So not even a 4 cylinder 4WD gets 20 mpg around town and 26 interstate? To me that's efficient. Much better than a 11 mpg Dodge Ram.

No 4X4 truck will get that. Tacoma 4X4's with the 2.7 will only get 18 to 22mpg but you can only get it as a 5-speed. You can get an older one with an auto though. If you put bigger tires on it, it will get much worse. That said they do come with 31 inch tires which are big enough for me.
I average 15 in the city and 23 highway with my honda ridgeline and it is 4 wheel drive. It has a 3.5 liter engine with 244 horses. It is much more comfortable than my old chevy truck, I have never had it in the snow, but I am a member of a club where owners have had no trouble in the snow. It can carry 1500 pounds and tow 5000 and is a crew cab that seats 5 comfortably. It also has an 8,5 cubic foot trunk in the bed. It is considered a small truck, but weighs our at more than 230 pounds more than my old chevy and nine inch's longer. My chevy got 6 city and 12 highway on a good day with a tail wind.
My fathers Honda CRV is full time 4WD and his 4cyl. gets about 23 city, 27 highway. I saw it on his trip computer. I love that little SUV. His Jeep Cherokee gets about 14/20 it's a pig. My Saab gets 25/32.
AWD will get you better handling on ice than 4x4(where even FWD is arguably better). if you're dealing with ice often in that snow a Subaru would be a nice investment. no "truck", but great fun none-the-less.

Wow. You must have had a really old Chevy. The Silverado now gets the best mileage of any full sized truck. I like the Ridgeline a lot, but the new Silverados cant be beat. They are roomy, tough, powerful, and decent looking. My biggest problem with the Ridgeline and the Toyota Tundra was room for me. Neither one was comfortable for me. I am pretty big (6'1" and about 215). Chevy and ford were much more comfortable. I do not know which of them has the most head/leg room, but it is the location of the space not the square or cubic inches that matter. You have to try each for a long drive to figure it out. I do not think that the older chevys were as roomy, but they sure are now.
The little trucks like ranger ,mazda, etc do not get much better mileage than a full size truck and they are uncomfortable and have limited haling capacity to boot. That is why I did not get one.

Hhhmm....you would think they would, since they weigh considerably less and usually have 4 or 6 cylinder engines.
I don't usually haul much, but I've always been a truck person.
We have a CRV but it's the wifes.
