Measure’s aim: To protect blind pedestrians from quiet hybrids.

Legislation setting a minimum sound level for vehicles sold in the United States by as early as 2010 is expected to be introduced on Wednesday in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill would require the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to lead a study to determine if a minimum sound level is needed to protect pedestrians, specifically the blind. And if such a level is necessary, the bill would set it.

The same debate has been going on for over 100 years... since the days of the Detroit Electrics at the turn of the Century... and I always thought "Quiet" is the sound of a well made automobile

How about requiring all hybrids to use half of their battery power to drive a 20,000 watt stereo that cannot be turned lower than 75% power?

Same here. A quiet car was supposed to be a quality car. Leave it to government to turn a desireable feature into a liability.

I agree that on a muscle car, a nice sounding exhaust is mandatory. However, on a luxury like like a Cadillac or Lincoln, quiet is the name of the game.

I've owned many muscle cars in my days and still have a few and love the sound of a big block under the hood. However, when I'm driving along in my Cadillac Eldorado, I want quiet and an environment that is not fatiguing on a long drive.

The Prius already beeps while in reverse, like a fork lift. That would be embarrassing to me.

true, though BMW makes it a point to have engine noise as part of the "ultimate driving experience", even if its nowhere as loud as a muscle car. i tend to like it. much easier/quicker to find out a problem when you can hear it(like a misfire, transmission sticking and engine revving high, etc)
