Buy a Jeep Wrangler, get a Vector Offroad full-width bar and use Ram Mounts. Perfect setup for on and off road. You can configure any way you like. This is how I have my Jeep set up.

You know that's not going to happen. People are afraid they're going to miss something. Remember when the phone was at home on the wall, tied to a wire.

The air vent mounts often come up short or the phone is just too big and heavy. Some might say just pair it and keep it in your pocket. Perhaps, but sometimes you want it in view.
I used super glue and mounted that daggone thing right to the dashboard. Hasn't budged once in 5 years!

Sorry, the horrifically cheapest cellphone-holder from Dollartree! Still have it, still works fine!

You've kept your phone for 5 years? Yeah, those Razrs lasted a long time.

There are so many different phone, so many different car interiors, so many mounts. I'm sure everyone has good intentions but specific examples quoted as recommendations are pretty worthless. Anecdotal comments would have a 1000 to 1 shot of matching the OPs setup.

Should you do it? I'd say yes.
I mount my cell to my windshield every time I get in my car. It's a suction-cup and Big-Clamp I put at the windscreen's top left corner and ran a power cable from my fuse-block's cigarette lighter circuit. When I run my Nav-GPS (Waze), I can see it out of the corner of my eye all the time, and can glance over to see specifics easier than I can glance down to see my dashboard. It's as good or better than a Heads Up Display. Yes, it's a distraction (as much as checking my speed or oil temp), but I evaluated the danger to be a lot less than the benefit of advanced knowledge of a sharp turn ahead, or a slow-down in traffic right around that turn. Or seeing I have 2 miles before my exit.

As for the actual mount:
OP: I'd say just keep trying different ones. I went through about 5 different ones from $8 to $30. For my car, and my location, the $8 actually worked best. It just had to be replaced due to a broken plastic-neck after about 3 years daily use. Ebay showed me a clone and I got two more, (1 for a spare).

If you want specifics: Phone = Samsung Gal S4, mount = https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DDBXW4O

Did you tried all those?

Or while using the Navi, following directions, this requires looking at the screen frequently while driving.

I would suggest building something custom, or paying someone to build it for you. You may be surprised how cheap it is to build something like this from scratch.

I only use magnetic type mounts now. The kind you squeeze your phone into always breaks on me after a couple weeks of use. I got an older Logitech magnetic mount a few years ago and love it. The magnet gets put in my phone case and all I have to is hold the phone near the mount and it sticks to it. When I get out, I just grab the phone and go. They don’t make this mount anymore but I see others that are just as good out there. This one suction cups to the windshield or to a disc stuck to the dash.
