Autonomous trucking operation in full swing. This has been a testing ground which will spread rather quickly.

Below is a link to the youtube video in which a reporter gives a preview of the operation and it's history. This is probably the most important report on what's to come in automation that has ever been produced.

I had a part in fully automating entire bottling lines in the 1970's which lead to a plant closure and a new plant with automated lines being built in another state. I think autonomous cars and trucks are much closer then most people realize.

Won’t have autonomous semi trucks for a long time yet to many safety issues. You’re talking about a 80,000 lb weapon on the road with no driver what could possibly happen, just ask Tesla.

Being in a controlled environment like a port is entirely different than being on the road with passenger cars.

Europe has been running autonomous truck fleets for years by now. Actually, they are much safer than man powered ones. can't get drunk, high, text while driving, be ion bad mood, get heart attack etc, etc. It's a machine. Can't even break down on the road as ECM will know ahead of time something is going wrong and WILL pull to tech service.

Again, no one is asking YOU, what to do and how to proceed. Decision was made, autonomous and electric WILL be implemented, non autonomous WILL be banned "for the best of our children" or "environment" and you WILL vote for it. You can "express yourself" in forums or on the street corner all you want to, the real power does not care.

And repercussions to this will be huge across many current automotive/driving/repair industry, as everything will become autonomous, repairs included. Sales, safety on the road, accordingly, insurance business, all health care related to accidents, policing, fueling, repairs. And I likely missed some.

Default Not according to this article. U.K. expects to have fully autonomous vehicles on the road by 2021.

I saw a few of these trucks being tested when I was down in Louisville, KY a couple weeks ago, they had HUGE flashing light bars on them, to alert other drivers, they were just testing them, but it was on a real street with other drivers. the trailer had 'Google' logo on the exterior!

I watched them for a short time, it was pretty interesting, they would run one down this stretch of road, (with a support car following) and then have them turn into this empty shopping center parking lot, turn around and go back the same way.

I dont know if any of you have seen one of these yet or not, but i was surprised, the 'tractor' portion, doesnt look like a truck at all, no windows, the cab is much smaller too, they sort of looked like yard trucks, but a little different.

How can the ECM know ahead of time that a fuel pump is going to fail, or radiator hose is going to blow, or a tire is going to blow out? Some things fail suddenly, so saying they “can’t break down on the road” is ridiculous.
