Back when i was looking at used cars, I noticed some had 'sun roofs' and others had 'moon roofs', Im assuming there is no difference between the two, just curious what everyones take on this is.
Regarding targa tops though, now, those are a bit different, Ive had 1 car with this top, and it was strange car to have a targa top, it was mid 90s, mid-size oldsmobile (cannot recall the model name), it sort of looked like T tops, but there was no center section, and covering was like a convertible top-type material, when you took it off, the whole roof was open (it hooked and snapped into place).
Ive not seen any newer cars with targa tops though, has anyone else?
Porsche made a Boxster with a removable fabric top like you're describing up until the 718 model, but the car was called a Spyder, not a targa top. They also make a 911 now with a retractable targa roof.
I don't really know if this is right or wrong, but from growing up in the '80s and '90s, a "sunroof" just pops open to vent (generally 2-3") and can be entirely removed and stowed if you want (which is usually a huge PITA so no one ever does it). A "moonroof" will either vent OR retract to leave an entirely open hole. I haven't seen a car with a factory "sunroof" built in about 30 years. They're all moonroof now.
I also don't know how each manufacturer might market their particular flavor of that concept. Some might call it one thing or another.
Also... In the '90s Oldsmobile made a Cutlass convertible, but I'm not aware of a targa roof model. I suppose it could be out there (since they already had the bones to build the full 'vert version, I guess it wouldn't be that hard to also offer a targa since they already had all of the other bracing and such in the parts bin) but both my memory and Google fail me while trying to find one.
edit: I imagine these days that most people do just use the terms interchangeably.
We had one of Buick Enclave’s first year models and it had a moon roof—that had only a black mesh screen — not solid moveable cover
Couldn’t take the heat coming through there
Had to use cardboard to block sun
Terrible design from someone who never drove w/moonroof I guess
Traded car in on a Tahoe which we had moved from...

This was the common thing in the '80s and early '90s, which I think is some of the logic behind "sun roof". The one in my Mustang has no shade either, and I also agree that I'm not a huge fan of it.
