That's my way of thinking. I'm old enough to remember the old days when 3-on-a-tree was the norm.
That made for lots of room in the front seat.

Why don't the manufacturers that make police cars that have a column shift offer a column shift to the general public?

Who pays for the conversion from floor shifter to column shifter - for all of these police cars?
Ford engineered the column shift for the police interceptors (Explorer and Taurus) - room was needed on the console for electronics.

Yes. Yes.

WHY not offer the column shift to the general public?

Some folks like the column shift. Offer it to them as it is already engineered.

Almost all cars offered both a column shift and a floor shift going back at least to the 1960's.

Since Ford already engineered the column shifter for the Taurus and Explorer - why not offer same to the general public. To the ones that want a column shift.

Yes, to those who generalize and state that they love their floor shifters and round dial shifters. That is not the point.

The column shift for these two vehicles is already engineered. So why not at least offer it to the general public?

It would require engineering a blank console for the 10-15 people that would buy it.

My new GMC has a column shift and prefer it to one on the floor. But it is subjective, but I sure would not have decided on a truck by where the shifter is located. More important items to consider.

Although i'd guess 5-10 people would buy it.
