Looking at cars that are somewhat practical, good on gas, under $20k, good safety ratings and can be expected to easily run a decade (10-15k miles/year) with just basic maintenance. Nothing too odd looking or smaller than a compact.

I was looking at an obvious contender in the Honda Civic, but then I happened to see that slightly used (under 25k miles) 2017/2018 Mazda 3s (I like the practicality of the hatchbacks) can be had for way under $20k...like $15k. MSRP was around $25k.

I can’t think of a better value at $15k. I hear they can even be somewhat fun for commuter cars. Perhaps the demand for trucks and CUVs has made it a little easier for cheap people to be cheap?

If your daily drive is less than 80 miles, then a 2016 (ish)Spark EV is a great choice. One of the more ecnomical bargain cars out there

Get a Corolla. I was looking for a small car with good gas mileage and reliability. I got a 2010 Corolla and have had it for 8 years now. Never an issue and I get in the mid to upper 30's consistently.

Therein lies the question... how far apart are A and B?
One can save a great deal of money, but it depends on the answer.

Civic or Corolla, particularly new. I'd go with the Corolla as it's just an older design. I'm not sure how the newer turbo Civics will hold up for 20 years but the Corolla is tried and true. Of course the Civic drives much better but that wasn't the question.

Late mod used it's harder. The higher depreciation on other makes can make them worth looking at used.

I would take the Corolla given those three choices.
