David Tivadar has spent three months trying to get fair trade-in value for his 2005 Lexus SUV, which gets about 17 miles per gallon. He would like to trade it in for a minivan that gets better mileage and can accommodate his baby daughter.
He bought the Lexus new for about $33,000, and said the monthly payments of $465 “would be more manageable if gas prices weren’t so high.”

IMO, this statement from the article says it all. This guy can't afford the SUV, regardless of the price of gasoline. Another prime example of lack of education by consumers. Who thought gas prices, even in 2005, would go down? This news is just an extension of what we have been seeing in the housing market...

Sounds like 1973 all over again....when people traded in their gas guzzlers for Pintos and Vegas....then there was a time where you almost couldn't give away a gas guzzler, be it a 1969 Charger or an Imperial.

You must be a clairvoyant... The SUV doesn't owe the "car corps" a dime. The SUV boom was an immense cash cow for all parties involved and has been up until very recently. I just hope you weren't trying to say SUV's were a bad idea.

To me it makes no sense that people who fork over $40,000+ for a car, will complain about the price of gas... that is A LOT of money for a car.

I say if you are going to have a gas guzzler make the most out of that energy you are consuming. I think its kind of silly when I see a person regularly commute alone in a 5000+ lb. truck or SUV. However I see it extremely practical when I see people using these vehicles to their full capacity, and I am currently looking for a 1-ton truck for myself... for practical reasons.

However silly I may think it is that people do this it is not my place to condemn. If someone can afford it then let them drive whatever they please... I dont buy the whole pollution = cause of global warming so people should be left to what they want to do. However I am just the type of person that likes to get the most out of everything... These vehicles are pieces of machinery that have been designed to perform an array of tasks. I dont care if gas was a nickel a gallon... I don't like seeing trucks and suv's under-utilized!!!
