This is rapidly becoming the EV debate forum. Perhaps this topic should get its own sub forum.

Because we are the beginning of the ICE to EV new car transition that will take place over the next decade.

Lots of fighting and resistance right now, but the old dogs will be put to pasture soon enough.

Or buried inside their V8 pickups.

It's going to take longer than a decade to make a full transition but if real world experience ends up matching the promises being made then yes someday it will probably happen.

Countries and US states have put deadlines for selling ICE cars between 10-15 years. Large car makers have also set similar deadlines. It is coming for sure, despite what some naive Luddites say. In the run up to the deadline there will be a big take up of new EVs and a dropping of ICE cars.

ICE cars will still be around after the deadlines, but fuel in time will disappear off the market as stations close. You may find the stations close in force as the deadlines near. In 15 years time it will be largely an EV world.

I have met no one who opposes EVs coming. No one. Most welcome them as air will be cleaner and less noise from engines on the streets.

It will take over 100 years or more before cargo and commercial aircraft can switch from existing fuels to electric, because of fuel density. There are numerous regions around the world where power generation using existing fuels are the only way. It will take a long time before hydro, solar, nuclear, wind, and oil are not longer used for power generation.

Also, the present level of mining for the material needed to build batteries is not infinite. These minerals aren't being extracted from the ground in every country around the world, but in a few places. And the building of these batteries take a lot of energy, time, and effort. The carbon footprint of building an EV is quite similar to the building of an ICE vehicle (both processes are big polluters).

They are arbitrary deadlines that will be updated to reflect reality as the roll out begins and more real world data is collected. The pace and the totality of any changeover will be a largely organic thing, and will encounter more resistance the more there is a push to implement artificial deadlines that do not reflect people's own experiences. Ironically it could be that the more you try to force it, the longer it will take. If you really want to see the changeover happen quickly then offer these vehicles as a better alternative, and back the promises up with reality instead of mandates. If EVs turn out as great as people hope they will there will be no need to try to ban the competition.
