Anyone have a general idea of what enforcement's like? I may be doing a little cruising this summer.

Nevada used to be "Safe and proper for conditions" but the Federales threatend to withold tax $ for new roads unless we changed it....so we did and the Govenor issued instructions to the NHP that they were not to enforce it on the open highways....that lasted about 3 years and they finally pressured us into it....or we got a Govenor without BAIIS ...either way, it's a thing of the past.....officially

Parts of Texas the speed limit is 80 MPH.

What is weird is my most comfortable cruising speed (in an appropriate vehicle) is about 83 MPH.

Virginia State Police are the best speed trappers I have ever seen. I'll never forget all of the times I was on I-85 and the traffic had probably been averaging around 90 mph throughout N. and S. Carolina and as soon as traffic passed the Virginia state line it would drop to around 70.

Other states you should be careful in if you like to speed are New Jersey, Arizona, and Alabama. Those places stick out as places with particularly plentiful highway patrolmen. But particularly Virginia.

It's a perfectly safe speed as long as there are no other drivers on the road. But it's not perfectly safe when a guy in the right lane pulls over right in front of you into the left lane at 65 to pass a guy going 60. That guy has a right to assume that nobody is coming up on him at 100 mph. How would you get past all the slowpokes going only 80?

70, in my opinion, is a pretty liberal speed allowance, considering that there are a lot of cars and drivers on the highway for whom more than that is NOT a perfectly safe speed. My rule of thumb is to make sure I can see somebody else who is going faster than I am. If I can see him, so can the cops.

Here in Texas, the limit is 70 on 2-lane roads. I can drive all day at 65, and not a single car will overtake me.
