The idiotic, illogical way most people drive, I really like having a large vehicle.

Gas prices though, a short trip costs $12.

A lot of these riders and RVers travel on the Alaska's Dalton Highway. Some (not all) of the RV's I have seen are 4x4 and have very large tires.

Yes, the 250cc motorcycles seem to be the most polar with long distance riders arriving to Alaska.

I see some RVers towing very small automobiles, too. I have seen a couple of very small Suzuki 4x4 automobiles around here. My 2012 Corolla is very economical, and lots of people around Fairbanks drive the small Toyota and Honda automobiles.

Carfax has a list of the cheapest and most fuel efficient automobiles.

These two top the list:
Kia Rio $16,250
36 mpg

Mitsubishi Mirage $16,595
39 mpg

How come? I would think a Prius is a great around town only car.

The main problem is using an eBike to pick up a couple bags of water softener salt.

An Easy Rider trike with one of their trailers would be great for cross-country travel. But if you already have the right bike such as a Honda Gold Wing or a Harley you can save a little cash (the kits are expensive).

A bike with a rear rack and panniers can be used to pick up some stuff... Ortlieb makes quality waterproof panniers

Yeah, that would be pushing it. Carrying a balanced 40lb on a sturdy rack is very doable, but 80lb would be asking for trouble. They do make special cargo bikes for carrying more serious loads, but I don't think they're as nice for general purpose riding. The rear rack on this puppy is rated for 120lb... note the stretched tail and lower center of gravity.

I can only imagine a bear chasing after a biker that carries 2 bags of water softener salt. A motorized Gold Wind tricycle makes more sense to me, or just the smallest ICE automobile available:
