Can't stand the auto start/stop feature. Unfortunately it can't be turned off on the wife's vehicle. And gladly it isn't even on my '19 truck.
I had it on a Jeep Grand Cherokee rental and I figured out right away it turns itself on on brake pedal pressure. When stopped you don’t push pedal all the way to floor and it doesn’t turn on.
It's an automated system that turns the engine off when idling in gear under certain conditions, and then restarts the engine as you take your foot off of the brake. Heavy-duty starters and batteries are used to compensate for the added wear. My 2019 Buick Encore uses an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery. My Encore also drops the heater fan to low position when the engine is off. The engine will stay off for a maximum of 2 minutes before restarting.

I permanently disabled mine.
Ford dealers are starting to give folks the option of disabling it upon purchase. Post-purchase, on some vehicles, it can be done with some free software (ForScan) and a USB cable
Whomever said cars ought to have start/stop should be forced to drive in start/stop traffic in the daytime in Las Vegas, in the summertime, in a vehicle with large glass panoramic roof windows.

The heavy duty starter motor drives up the vehicle price. Also, the 12 Volt battery in such vehicles are much beefier and typically cost DOULBE what a 12 volt battery for a traditional non-stop/start vehicle - but does not last any longer.
Well... that is true. I was just speaking to the idea that the starting motor would prematurely fail. You are right. You pay for it. I didn't even know HD battery required.
I hate start/stop. I am certainly not advocating for it.
Hate it and leave it turned off. I live out in the sticks, and my town doesn't even have a traffic light, so it comes on by itself just often enough to be annoying without any significant benefit in terms of reducing fuel consumption.
I hate it just as much as CVT transmissions (I would never buy nor rent a car with CVT).
During summer it never comes on due to AC, but I need to find a way to permanently remove it to save my starter.

It is not that much higher cost - CNET looked at the costs several years ago and estimated that it costs about $275 to include it in a new vehicle and estimated that it saved about $10/month or just over 2 years to recoup these costs - https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/videos...top-explained/.
With the costs for these systems going down and gas going up 50% since then - probably save the money in just over a year if use it now. The EPA estimates 50 percent of drivers turn the feature off but since it increases EPA mileage about 5%, many manufacturers will continue to use it but more are offering easy ways to override. I do not like these systems (or CVT) when had them on rentals but they were not that intrusive.
It took me all of 30 seconds to get used to it when I last had an ICE car as a rental. Y'all are so set in your ways...
You can get used to the taste of brussel sprouts, too... but that certainly doesn't make them taste good.
