I usually go under 3000 miles a year. I use mobile one extended protection full synthetic oil with the Mobile one extended protection filter. I change it once a year.

My driving patterns are.
1) Once a week 30 mile round trip to town.
2) Occasionally run up to Nashville (60 miles each way) or down to Atlanta (160 miles).
I rarely do short drives (less than 5 miles)

At the end of the day - oil is a wear and tear item. The time/ mileage indicator is simply a "guideline". This is where the "your mileage may vary" notion can be emphasized.

This is why you should check the oil via the dipstick. Or better yet, have your oil analyzed so you understand how fast the oil in your car breaks down based on your driving.

I do 5K for 10K recommended, but ... whatever.

It could still fail.

I changed my last car's oil RELIGIOUSLY at 3K and it recommended 5 or 6K.

And the engine still gave at 150K.. It wasn't catastrophic but I decided to let it go.

That's a lot of miles.

Somebody is always going to come up with a reason why they got 280K mi out of their car and you didn't because they were smarter/better.

Stop buying cheap oil!

The cheapest I do oil changes for is $75. $15 for a filter and $60 for 4 quarts of oil.

Do your own oil changes, 10 bucks for a good OEM or Mobil 1 filter, and another 25-30 bucks per 5 quart container of Mobil 1 synthetic.

I get Mobile 1 full syn for $27 5 quarts and fill up to 4.9 quarts as listed in the mfg spec and a filter cost only $12.

There are Royal Purple that goes for $60.

I change oil using the maintenance minder which indicates oil life. Vehicle is a 2018 Acura RDX AWD SUV. This is the dealer recommendation. I use Mobile 1 synthetic exclusively. Never had any issues, car runs well.

My 2011 Golf 2.5 is 10K intervals. I always followed that unless a seriously long amount of time passed between my 10k. I don't drive for work, so I can go 1.5 years without hitting 10k.

Even though the first 50k miles were all regular interval (10K) changes, my engine still sounds and runs perfect. With that being said, I didn't know following my regular service intervals would be of concern. I was shocked when they told me it was every 10k, I even had them confirm I was hearing correctly. I always service at the dealer so I am always using the recommended oil and filter.

Jacking up and securing a car is hard work when you're over say 73.

I REALLY lucked out on my new 2020 Lexus NX. I don't have to jack it up. I don't have to drive it up a low ramp or wooden board. All I have to do is ensure it is on level ground. There is enough room there for me to just slide under it (lying on a piece of cardboard) and change the oil and filter! This is THE EASIEST oil/filter change I've ever had in my entire life.
