My question: I recently had the "garage mgr" tell me that my SUV needed front & rear brakes. Ok, fine I thought. Then he calls & said "You need new parking brakes too" ??? Huh? Um parking brakes are Emergency brakes right? I never used my emergency brake. He says that's the problem. They need to be replaced & were worn down my the other brakes.

Can this be true? I've never heard of this theory.

thanks

I'd go get the car from those crooks right now!

The emergency brakes aren't separate...the rear brakes are applied when you set the emergency/parking brake.

Plus rear brakes shoes/or pads last much longer (maybe twice as long) than the front ones, so it's odd that both would need replacing at the same time.

Sounds like another tactic used by garages to swindle unsuspecting customers out of their hard earned money.

Yes your emergency brakes are also known as your parking brakes. Unless you drive around with the e-brake on all the time there's no reason why the rear shoes should be worn out.

What kind of car. Some older Chrysler prods had a parking brake on the drive shaft. There are some other cars, with rear disc brakes, that have parking brake shoes on a small brake drum that is part of the rear brake rotor. Don't remember make or model on those.

Unhappy On the phone now

I just gulped a cuppa coffee & got the Service Center Mgr on the phone.

He said "They do wear out & considering you have 74k on your Suburban, you did good" "The parking brakes do apply when you apply the rear brakes"

So I paid for brakes all around, front , rear, parking.

Thanks for all your feedback on this

this is very true. the only thing you should need to be replaced on a parking brake would be a froze up or rusted if you will emergency brake cable. i would not let these guys do anything to your car. GO GET IT RIGHT NOW!!!!!

I hope he asked to see the old parts. Like someone mentioned, only if he has rear disc brakes are the e-brake shoes seperate fron the rear brake shoes.
