I have owned several Subarus and also a Mazda CX-5. You can buy a CX-5 new for high 20s. You can also by a CX30 for mid to high 20s as well. Both are excellent vehicles. I have been impressed with the Mazda. It is one of the best driving cars I've owned.
Many good suggestions, but for under 30K, why buy used when highlanderfil is correct, a new Subaru Crosstrek is the answer.
Doesn't even need to be a new Crosstrek. Can be a slightly used Outback or Forester just as easily, depending on the size needed. I'd look for an Outback XT myself, but I prefer power over fuel economy in all my cars. It's too bad Subaru hasn't seen the light in offering a Crosstrek XT with a stick (a modern-day WRX wagon, if you will). It'd be parked in our garage over my GTI right now.
BTW Subaru should bring back the Justy, or something like it. The market for it is big.
You've misspelled "nonexistent". Otherwise, surely, Suzuki/Toyota would have been all over it with the Jimny.
