The pre quoted price was $62, the final price was $76. I was at the airport with no alternative to get home. And this is at the Burbank airport in metro LA with Uber drivers all over.
Last trip was about $25 (before tip) for 13 miles. Fairly reasonable. You can see the surge pricing before you use it so it's not like it is a surprise. You can get a coffee at Starbucks and wait for a few hours or check and see if you can get a taxi cab or use a bus....

I guess the drivers are getting rich. No way i would want nut cases driving in my Vette no matter what i go paid.
Uber burned through a ton of cash achieving scale. As such, prices were intentionally cheap in the beginning.
Now that they've achieved scale, their unit costs are lower and they can maintain their position. As such, their owners now want to see stock appreciation delivered by growing profits.
So far in 2023, the stock has doubled. Maximizing shareholder value is the biggest priority of publicly owned firms.
They have a fiduciary responsibility to do that for their shareholders.

You know Pizza Hut layoff many drivers,so you will see more everywhere in CA ,thanks to the $20 minimum wage starting April 2024
I've never taken Uber or Lyft. Before they showed up in Anchorage cab service was the worst. You'd call dispatch and the phone would ring and ring. When they finally did answer, you never knew when the cab would show up. When returning from a trip at the airport, often there were no cabs available.
Since Uber and Lyft came to town, the cab service is nearly impeccable. Call dispatch and they pick up the phone within 2 rings. A cab will be at your house in 10-15 minutes. The fare is always the same. At the airport, there is almost always a cab available when you come out of the terminal.
Given the change in service, I prefer cabs. Rather not have apps tracking my movements and as I said, the fare is consistent.

Something sounds off to me. I don't believe there is really such thing as a "pre-quoted price". When you book a ride on the Uber app you lock in the fare and it doesn't change. The quoted fare is only good for that exact time you are looking at it as if you are ready to go at that time.
What I have done is checked the Uber price much earlier than when I expect to leave, not really intending to book it that early just yet. Then when I return later the fare price will always be different. You can get a decent idea of the cost. But even just a few minutes later, I have seen it change significantly. I'm wondering if this is what you had experienced.
We were in Vegas and I checked it, saw the cost, but my wife was taking longer shopping of course, so by the time I booked, the fare went up about $9-$10 because it began to rain, which raises demand/cost since I assume more people chose to ride Uber rather than walk the Strip outside, just like we did.
