Archaic and not a great value in today's world, IMO.
'09 Camaro, coming soon......
I don't know how you could call them archaic. The LS1 they came with is an awesome engine and there's a wealth of aftermarket parts for them. The car itself is technology redefined. Plus they can be had w/o breaking the bank.
Those new Camaros will probably be like the second coming of the GTO...last a few years then flop.
Toyota MR2 turbo. You can pick one up in excellent condition for about 10 grand, and it's already done most of its depreciating.
30+ grand puts you in used Porsche 911 territory too.
Another good Porsche option is a 1988 944 Turbo S or a 1989 944 turbo. 250HP in a 2750lb car is a hell of a time. An excellent condition version runs up to about 20 grand, and as long as you keep it in excellent condition it will barely lose any of its value -- the 1989 turbo and 1988 Turbo S are in high demand.
A note on a 944 turbo versus a Turbo S -- the "regular" 944 turbo puts out "only" 217 horsepower. In 1988 they upped the ante and made a "Turbo S" version with 250HP that sold alongside the "regular" turbo. In 1989 the 217HP turbo was dropped, so the Turbo S simply dropped the "S" designation as it was no longer the upgraded turbo version but the only turbo version.
Also on my list would be a BMW M Coupe or M Roadster -- even the Z3 3.0 coupe or roadster would probably be quite sufficient.
I love the ford thunderbird and have not seen it listed as a suggestion. I have never driven one, but I like the styling and the soft/hard roof.
Next choice would be a mini cooper convertible. Fun looking, fun to drive I have been told and lots of aftermarket. There was a mini-convention a couple weekends ago in NH, and there were dozens of heavily customized coopers - very fun.
