They are not cutting production to eventually shut down, it is to reduce cost over a product that has diminishing demand.
Last month when GM decided to cut truck production they said they see demand shifting towards smaller cars and they are up for the challenge.
They also said that the workers who will be let go because of the ceasing truck production will likely be rehired for the next small car production.
